The suspense surrounding the appointment of the new MP CM (Chief Minister for Madhya Pradesh) has finally been lifted as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally announced Mohan Yadav as the chief minister-elect.
The decision was reached following a legislative party meeting on Monday, December 11, where BJP observers, including Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar, OBC Morcha President K Laxman, and Secretary Asha Lakra, met with the newly elected BJP MLAs in Bhopal. Mohan Yadav, an MLA from Ujjain South and a former Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet minister, emerged as the chosen candidate.
This resolution comes after intense discussions in New Delhi and Bhopal following the BJP’s decisive victory in the assembly elections with 163 seats, overcoming anti-incumbency sentiments.
Who is the New MP CM Mohan Yadav?
Mohan Yadav is the MLA for the South Ujjain constituency. 2013 saw Mohan Yadav win the Ujjain Dakshin seat and become an MLA for the first time. He was elected again in the 2018 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, representing the Ujjain Dakshin seat as an MLA. He was sworn in as a cabinet minister in the government of Madhya Pradesh, led by Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on July 2, 2020.
In the Madhya Pradesh political landscape, the BJP, relying heavily on the widespread appeal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approached the recent elections without positioning four-time Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as its front face. Chouhan has held office four times since 2005 and was not projected prominently in the election campaign.
The potential candidates for the chief minister’s role included OBC leader Prahlad Patel, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kailash Vijayvargiya, state unit chief VD Sharma, and recently elected Dimani MLA Narendra Tomar. The BJP, which has historically seen OBC leaders as Chief Ministers in Madhya Pradesh since 2003, maintained its electoral dominance in the state, winning 163 out of 230 assembly seats in the November 17 polls.
With Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar among the central observers, the BJP leaders arrived in Bhopal to meet the newly-elected MLAs and determine the state’s next chief minister. This victory marks the BJP’s fifth time forming the government in Madhya Pradesh in two decades, having previously secured power in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2020.
