What is CLAT?
The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized national-level entrance exam, facilitating admissions to 25 out of 27 National Law Universities (NLU) across India, excluding NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya, which have independent entrance tests. Introduced in 2008, CLAT aimed to streamline admission processes for National Law Schools/Universities in the country.
NLU Delhi conducts admissions through the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET), and NLU Meghalaya, a relatively recent establishment, has its entrance exam. Plans are underway to merge AILET and NLU Meghalaya’s test into CLAT. Beyond NLUs, select private and self-financed law schools also use CLAT scores for admissions.
Public sector undertakings such as ONGC, Coal India, BHEL, Steel Authority of India, Oil India, and the Indian Army (for JAG officer recruitment) utilize CLAT Post Graduation (CLAT PG) scores.
Taken after the Higher Secondary Examination or the 12th grade for integrated undergraduate law programs and after graduation from Master of Laws (LL.M) programs, CLAT is renowned for its challenging nature, boasting an acceptance rate as low as 3 per cent in India.

A notable achievement was a student and his teacher from Bengaluru, who achieved top-5 all-India rankings in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT 2024), disclosed on Sunday, as reported by Sruthy Susan Ullas. Pradhyot Shah, a class 12 student at Mallya Aditi International School, secured an impressive second rank, while Rahul Pulakurthy, his teacher at Career Launcher Indiranagar, secured the third rank.
Expressing his disbelief at achieving a score similar to his teacher, Pradhyot acknowledged Rahul’s excellence in teaching. He emphasized his focused approach towards cracking CLAT after identifying law as his passion.
In conversation with TOI, Rahul highlighted the importance of teachers taking such exams to enhance teaching strategies, stay updated with exam patterns, and gain insights into their teaching methods for students preparing for competitive exams.
